About Kazakhstan

The world’s ninth-biggest country is the most economically advanced of the Central Asian States. It has abundance of natural resources including oil reserves. This means generally better standards of accommodation, restaurants and transport than elsewhere in Central Asia. The biggest city, Almaty, is almost reminiscent of Europe with its leafy avenues, chic Alzhir Museum-Memorial Complex, glossy shopping centers and excited life. The capital Nur-Sultan, on the windswept northern steppe, has been transformed into a 21st-century showpiece with a profusion of bold futuristic architecture.

But the modern architecture of urban life is the not the only thing to amuse your senses.

Beyond the cities there is much to satisfy your aesthetic needs. You'll find the greatest travel adventures, whether hiking in the high mountains and green valleys of the Tian Shan, searching for wildlife on the lake-dotted steppe, enjoying homespun hospitality in village guesthouses, or jolting across the western deserts to remote underground mosques.

Geography

Kazakhstan is located in Central Asia and is the heartland of Central Asian States. With a surface area of 2,724,900 sq km, Kazakhstan is the 9^th largest country in the world, comparable to India and Australia.
Kazakhstan's surface is covered by 26% desert, 44% semi-desert, 6% forest and 24% steppe terrain, in addition to a few other landscapes. The South and East have great wild and mostly untouched mountain landscapes with the Tien Shan and Altai being the most prominent. The highest peak in the country is Khan Tengri at 7,013m above sea level.

In the east, north and northwest Kazakhstan borders with Russia (6477 kilometres). In the south it borders with the countries of Central Asia: Uzbekistan (2300 kilometres), Kyrgyzstan (980 kilometres) and Turkmenistan (380 kilometres). In the southeast it borders with China (1460 kilometres). The total extent of Kazakhstan borders is nearly 12,2 thousand kilometres, including 600 kilometres along the Caspian Sea in the west.

The Capital, Nur-Sultan

Nur-Suktan, the capital of Kazakhstan is the showcase of modern architecture. Formerly it was called Astana.

 Almaty

Almaty continues as the major commercial and cultural center of Kazakhstan, as well as its most populous and most cosmopolitan city. It’s a surprisingly modern city. It’s the cultural, historical and financial center of the country. Being the former capital of Kazakhstan, It’s a developed city with highly built infrastructure, shopping malls, towering buildings and splendid living.

The natural diversity of the Almaty region is amazing – from arid deserts and scenic canyons to lush valleys, snowcapped mountains, beautiful glaciers, and turquoise lakes.

The city is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan in the foothills of the  at an elevation of 700–900 m (2,300–3,000 feet), where the Large and Small Almatinka rivers run into the plain.It has a relatively mild climate with warm and dry summers and quite cold winters.

Big Almaty Lake

Big Almaty Lake is a natural lake located in mountains on 2511 above the sea level near Almaty (15 km South from Almaty). Like a majority of lakes in Trans-Ili Alatau, this lake formed as the result of an earthquake. The lake is a major source of drinking water for the region. People can access the lake by car (approximately 1 hour drive from the city center), bike, or hiking (approximately a half-day trip).

Ascension Cathedral

The main attraction in Almaty's Panfilov Park is the Ascension Cathedral, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, built during early 20th century. Ethnic Russians are the chief visitors.

Ile-Alatau National Park

A beautiful park located in mountains in the south of Almaty. The park was created in 1966 and is home to approximately 300 species of wildlife, including the snow leopard.

There are a lot of hiking trails in this national park.

Charyn Canyon

The Charyn Canyon is located in the Charyn National Park about 215km east of Almaty and at an approximate drive of a nearly four hours. The vista of dramatic erosion made by the river creates a dramatic landscape.

Kolsai Lakes

The Kolsai Lakes are a system of three lakes, nestled among the hills of the Northern Tien Shan Mountains, approximately 300km east of Almaty. They are also called “The Pearl of the Northern Tien Shan”. The pure water is so transparent that when the sun is out, the surrounding forests, hills and snowy mountain peaks are mirrored in the water. The lakes are surrounded by spruce trees, alpine meadows, and mountain pastures.
